PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours

Decimal time is base 10; clock minutes are base 60. A simple division or multiplication connects them.

Minutes to decimal hours

Divide minutes by 60. Thirty minutes is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50 hours. Forty-five minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours.

When a duration includes whole hours, convert only the remaining minutes and add the result. Seven hours 45 minutes becomes 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.

  1. Keep the whole-hour portion unchanged.
  2. Divide the remaining minutes by 60.
  3. Add the two values and round only when the receiving system requires it.

Decimal hours back to time

Multiply decimal hours by 60 and round to the nearest whole minute. For 7.75 hours, 7.75 × 60 = 465 minutes. Divide 465 by 60 to get 7 whole hours with 45 minutes remaining.

The converter performs the calculation before formatting the answer, avoiding mistakes such as reading .30 as 30 minutes. In decimal time, .30 hour is 18 minutes.

Choose a sensible precision

Two decimal places are common for display, but they cannot represent every minute exactly. One minute is approximately 0.0167 hours. Use three or four decimal places when another system needs greater precision, while retaining exact integer minutes internally.

Avoid repeated rounding

Convert and round the final total rather than repeatedly rounding every small segment. Repeated rounding can make a weekly total drift away from the minutes actually entered.
